Horrid Henry Sample

Jabberwocky Kids sent me 10 copies of a one chapter sample of Horrid Henry.

The books will have four separate stories in them - this sample has one story. Horrid Henry is currently the #1 children's series in UK.

April 1st you'll be able to buy Horrid Henry, Horrid Henry's Stinkbombs, Horrid Henry Tricks the Tooth Fairy, and Horrid Henry and the Mega-Mean Machine. They're written by Francesca Simon.

The story is Horrid Henry's Dance Class. As you might have guessed, Henry does NOT want to go to dance class. He's easily the worst student in the class. Wait until you see what happens!

These are easy to read and Henry is stubborn, headstrong little fella that might resemble someone you have in your household if it holds boys.

I have ten copies to give away, so email me with your name and address at info@bookfaerie.com and leave a comment here on the blog. Should have enough for everybody on this one!

Afraid by Jack Kilborn

This book has the potential of causing you nightmares...

Imagine a small secluded town in the mountains where everyone knows everyone and life is very laid back.

Imagine a group of five superhuman warriors coming to town with the intention of killing everyone there... This group of monsters have been highly trained to cause pain, most are psychotic, all are killers, and they have very unusual tastes...

I've read a lot horror stories, but this book still got to me. It's a mad scientist who wants to cleanse the world, like Hitler's vision, and he's given these monsters computer chips in their brains to make them faster, their skin is bulletproof, and they have permission to pull off whatever atrocities they want as long as they get the man they're going after.

I couldn't put it down after I started it. They are very successful at what they do, I can tell you that!

The 8th Confession by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro

Patterson never disappoints.

This is a fast paced murder mystery in which very, very rich people are dying without anyone able to determine a cause. They're all healthy, happy, rich as sin, and very dead.

The Women's Murder Club is determined to find the cause, but it's very elusive. They find nothing in common between the murders except extreme wealth - and you don't die from that normally.

In addition, a preacher with a message of hope for homeless is brutally executed. But it seems he may not have been as saintly as everyone had thought...

Then add in sparks flying between Lindsay and her partner Rich Conklin, they try to avoid it. But then Cindy, Lindsay's friend, enters the mix...

This was a lively book that I enjoyed reading.

The Prosecution Rests edited by Linda Fairstein

My favorite reads are mystery short stories, and this book was fun for me to review!

There are 21 new stories about courtroom fights, legal shenanigans, and even lawyer murder.

In one case, the lawyer planned the death of a husband so he could have the wife - but, instead, there's an ironic ending - I liked it!

Then there's the lawyer who thought he was going to win the luscious wife and the fortune the murdered man left. But when he goes to court to try the case, he finds out the witnesses lied, the accused murder is not what he seems, and the case goes awry. He also finds himself in jail!

None of these stories are boring. They're fast paced and good reading.

Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

If you like things "fae", this book is for you!

This the sequel to Wicked Lovely, and it's a challenge to keep up with which fairy is playing what kind of game...

Aislinn has been transformed into fairy, but Seth, the man she loves, has not. They're trying to remain true to each other and accept the differences, but Seth knows Keenan, the fairy prince, wants her for herself. And since humans are mortal and fairies not, he's pretty sure he knows how it's going to turn out.

But no one is what they seem, especially the fae, and there are a lot of subplots in the story.

Seth is willing to a chance that could cause his death to be able to stay with Aislinn. You'll need to read the book to find out how it turns out...

I'm giving away my ARC - leave a comment here on the blog and send me an email with your name and address to info@bookfaerie.com - I'll be holding a drawing later.

Crocheting isn't going far...

It's been warmer than they predicted and I can't hold yarn on my lap and crochet - makes me hot. And my inspiration for crocheting seems to have dried up. That seems to happen each spring.

My daffodils are all done blooming, my tulips are coming up. The anthuriums next to the house are growing nicely, but bloom later in the spring.

And, my allergy nemesis is spouting catkins like mad - the mulberry tree! Ugh! I have been taking various kinds of over the counter medicine trying to calm my nose down. I get worn out from trying to breath...

We also get winds in the spring here in New Mexico, and you can see clouds of green pollen floating through the air.

I stay inside, keep the doors and windows closed, and wait for the catkins to dry up and fall off the tree.

I was going to take some time off and work on the blanket for my mom, but you can't crochet very well with a kleenex in your hand. And Abebooks who was going to do maintenance on the their computers for three days beginning Sunday has now put it off until next Sunday. Sheesh!

Think I'll just try to get to Mom's blanket and do some more reading for a while. Taking a break from working seven days a week on listing books feels good anyway.

Do you use Twitter?

If you do and would like to follow my rambling posts there, I'm bkfaerie there.

I try to post about my day on there at least once a day. I'm probably one of the few people in the world who doesn't have a cell phone, so I have to take a few minutes to catch up with what has been said and the post my comments online.

Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells

I've never been into vampires, but this tale grabbed me!

There are vampires, demons, mages, fairies, and more in the cast of characters, and Sabina is vampire assassin. If that doesn't intrigue you, how about the fact that the potential of impending war between the vamps and mages and she's being used as a pawn - first by her own grandmother, and then by others she meets along the way.

I love her demon - he can change shapes and ends up getting stuck as a cat. She tries to fix it and send him home, and he turns into a hairless cat...

It's a very intense read, and has left me anxiously awaiting for the next book to be written. I want to see where this storyline goes.

If you'd like to taste this author and see how you'd like the book, leave a comment here on my blog and send an email to info@bookfaerie.com. I'll choose a winner and send it on.

Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow by James Rollins

Boy, this one takes you on a ride!

A boy and his sister (both teens) have lost their parents in archaeological accident. When they get an invite to visit an exhibit of the artifacts the parents had found, all expenses paid, they couldn't wait to go. However, maybe they should have wondered why they got all this for "free". After all, most free things cost you in some way...

They end up being transported in time, meeting dinosaurs and creatures that lived a long, long time ago, and then they find All-World. Various tribes and groups of people from Neanderthals to Mayans to Romans to Vikings to ???

Unfortunately, the Skull King is attempting to conquer that world and they get drawn into that plot, too.

Do they survive? Do they ever get back home? And why did they end up there to begin with?

I'm giving my copy away. Leave a comment here on the blog and then send me an email at info@bookfaerie.com and I'll enter you in the drawing.

The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan

Are you afraid of demons? Then don't read this book!

The storyline is gripping and I was totally surprised at the ending. Normally I have an idea of where a book is going, but not this time...

Nick and his brother, Alan, are always on the run. Magicians use demons to do their dirty work, and they have already killed the boy's father. Their mother is now crazy. So they do the best they can, and keep on the move so they aren't marked and claimed by some magician.

Alan is Nick's partner and he trusts him totally. But then Nick begins to think that Alan isn't always telling him the truth about things and that shakes him totally. What if his life as he knows it isn't really how it is?

You'll have get a copy of this book and read it to see how it all turns out. This is for young adults, but it's some scary stuff, so be aware of that.

If you'd like my advance reader's copy, just leave a comment here on my blog and then email me at info@bookfaerie.com to tell me why you'd like to win the book.

Happy reading!

I've been listing books every day...

...just like a good bookseller. But then I had a big dry period with no orders and it really depressed me. I have over 6,000 books online, don't tell me you can't be tempted by something I have listed!

But the dry period continued - until this morning. Then I got three orders through Google! That's cool!

I think what happened was that I had to do a purge and replace on my own website to make sure I had the right books listed - somehow the count got off.

I check each time I upload, but sometimes I get busy or don't get the email back or... And it was off. When I removed my books and replaced them, I think it took a bit of time for my books to get indexed again on Google. Sigh...

But they are up now and all systems are go.

I posted a Pelton Water Wheel catalog from 1905 and a Handbook of Practical Mechanics today, along with other interesting books.

Who knows what I'll find to list for tomorrow?

Emily the Strange - The Lost Days by Rob Reger and Jessica Gruner

Even if the young adult in your family is not fond of reading, this one should lead he/she into it.

Fantasic illustrations, strange characters, amnesia, fines from the cops for everything - what's the story and how is it going to turn out????

She wears Goth clothes, doesn't even know who she is or how she got here or why the cats like her, but she's on a mission. To do what, she knows not.

This town is not like the one you live in. Nor are the people like anyone you know.

A great "odd" adventure that should draw children to read it because it's fast paced, well illustrated and entertaining!

If you'd like my review copy, leave a message here on my blog and send me an email at info@bookfaerie.com.

Try this book, you'll like it!

For the first time...

...I sold more books on my own website than I did on the other websites combined!

I was well pleased to see that 55.23% of my sales came from my own efforts at publicizing, listing, and changing stock to increase sales.

Alibris was next, Abebooks next, Amazon next, and Biblio next.

I need more dollar volume, but at least I'm getting visitors and sales. I've just got to keep listing those books!

Today I put up some young adult books and some science fiction/fantasy. I also got a haircut.

And I was lucky enough to get an autographed copy of a book I reviewed from the publisher/author as a gift - way cool!

I'll be picking another book to review soon. Don't forget to check out the one posted now.

Boneman's Daughters by Ted Dekker

Talk about suspense, this book will keep you reading until you notice you're not breathing anymore...

It has very graphic violence in it, so be forewarned.

The story line begins in Iraq, with a soldier who works in intelligence being captured by the opposing forces. They want him to give up his wife and daughter in exchange for his freedom and the lives of some young children of their land. He doesn't, and it gets ugly.

After this traumatic experience, he begins to assess his life and lack of time spent with his family. But when he returns home to be a husband and father again, both his wife and daughter reject him.

While this process is taking place, a suspected serial killer is released from prison because the evidence is found lacking.

It just so happens the prisoner was NOT the killer, and the real killer goes back into action when he's released.

He kidnaps girls and intends to make them his daughter - but none of them are worthy of it. So he kills them by breaking their bones and leaving them to die...

Ryan, the soldier, is trying to get his daughter to see him, but she keeps refusing. He makes a fool out himself by trying to force the issue, and the police get involved.

Then his daughter disappears. He tells them he doesn't have her, but they don't believe him. And then he learns about the BoneMan, and he knows he's the only one who's going to save her - the others won't be in time.

It has a real sucker punch of an ending that makes the whole story even more ironic. You'll have to read it to find out how it all ties together.

If you'd like to have my review copy, please leave a comment on this post and then email me at info@bookfaerie.com to tell me why you'd like to have it. I'll choose a winner in about a week.

The book is shown above and you can read a bit of it online if you'd like!
