The Girl and The Raven by Pauline Gruber

When Lucy's mother dies, she's sent to her two Uncles who live in Grandmother's house.  What she doesn't know is that the other house residents (renting apartments) are a mix of magical beings that will be involved in her quest to stay alive...

Dragonfly Ink Ltd and Net Galley allowed me to read this book for review (thank you).  It was published in January, so grab a copy at your local bookstore now.

Lucy finds out that her grandmother was a witch and her raven was her familiar.  So is the female tenant in her grandmother's house, who also has a bird familiar.  The "brother" she has her eye on upstairs is also eyeballing her.  She'll be amazed when she learns what he really is.  And, if that's not enough, she's got a demon after her.  That's bad, right?  It's even worse when she finds out he's her father!

Lucy tries to avoid her father, gets involved with another boy at school, and discovers that demons don't mind using torture and death to get what they want.  They don't use it on you; they use it on the ones you love.  Lucy learns another important thing:  Never bargain with a demon; they'll always get the best of deal.

This is a busy book with lots of magic, mayhem and plotting going on.  Nobody is all good or all bad.  Some are not nice at all.  But it will take everyone working together to stop the madman from killing Lucy.

I was a bit surprised by the madman's identity.  He wasn't a major player and he seemed harmless.  Wrong!  Let me know if you figure it out before the thrilling ending.  I also suspect this is just the first book in a new series.  Now that we know who the players are, the tale can get even more interesting.

Happy reading.
