Nuts to You by Lynne Rae Perkins

Jed knew better than to listen to the cries about wolf that came from another male in the camp.  He was just looking for attention.  But Jeb should have been paying better attention himself.  He got nabbed by a hawk!

Green Willow Books and Edelweiss gave me the opportunity to read this book for review (thank you).  It will be published August 26th, so make a note to pick it up then.  Middle graders will love this one!

Jed was lucky; he's just resting in the claws.  He wasn't injured, so his next goal is to get loose.  He makes a noise and startles the hawk, relaxes, managing to evade the hawk's clamp on him, but he's got a long fall...

His friends from home are watching and hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.  They're amazed to see him fall.  Then they realize how far away from home he is and wonder if he will ever get back.  It's a good thing he's got TsTs for a friend.  She's smart and figures out how to get to where he is without traveling by land.  They can use the buzzing wires.  She counts how many cobwebs they must cross to get there. She and Chai are soon off on their mission.  Everything is going very well until they get bored and play a game - losing their way...

In the meantime, Jed is making friends with some red squirrels that have funny accents.  They eat pine nuts; he prefers acorns.  They are friendly enough, but he wants to go home. As if that wasn't enough, there are loggers in the area cutting back the trees near the power lines.  Being lost is one thing, getting smashed by a tree is another!

The three friends finally reunite and even gain another squirrel in their quest to get back to their home.  They have to warn the other squirrels in the grove of the danger.  But squirrels don't listen to warnings or orders.  How will they protect them?

This story teaches you facts about squirrels and how they live in the wild.  Sometimes the world comes closer to you than you want, but there are ways of dealing with it.  These three squirrels came up with a perfect example.
