Nothing can prepare you to hear the words from a doctor telling you that you have Alzheimer's. Especially not at the age of 49. You hope it will take a long time to happen but there are no guarantees in life...
Atria Books and Edelweiss gave me the opportunity to read this book for review (thank you). It will be published August 4th, so you can grab a copy then.
This is a mind boggling read. Jerry writes murder mysteries and his work has been going downhill but he feels he's capable of writing another book. When his editor tells him he must use a ghostwriter, it's hit to his ego and his self-confidence.
I have taken care of grandparents that had memory loss so I have an idea how this disease can affect you. Jerry goes through all the stages of Alzheimer's in this story. He starts to identify with his main character. He worries his wife is screwing around on him. He also begins to wonder if these stories he's written about murder might not be true. Could he be a killer?
There's a lot of trauma, a lot of confusion, and a lot of manipulation in this story. It's messy and mean but at least a piece of justice comes to pass. Jerry may not remember it but it happened. It's too bad he can't because it would make him feel better. On the other hand, not being able to remember means there are no regrets or guilty feelings to bother him. Alzheimer's is from hell but it can seem like a safe haven to those who live in simpler world now.
You'll understand why it's titled Trust No One when you read this story...
