An Inheritance of Ashes by Leah Bobet

It all starts when the wild thing hits her window and she tries to help it thinking it's a bird and then tries to kill it because it's dangerous.  She ended up getting burned by it, but she's more concerned with getting rid of it and telling her sister and neighbors about it.  She'll find out soon enough why she should worry...

Clarion Books and Edelweiss gave me the opportunity to read this book for review (thank you).  It has been published, so you can grab a copy now.

Hallie grew up with an abusive father.  His influence on her and her older sister has molded them into the family they are now.  Her sister's husband went to war and has not returned.  She's pregnant.  With only the two of them to keep the farm running, it's hard.  So are the words between them.

When a veteran shows up at their house and offers to work for no more than room and board, she takes him on.  Her sister isn't happy, but Hallie can't do all the work herself.  What Hallie doesn't anticipate is that he might bring the war to her.  He's a vet alright.  And his time in the service was bad.

There's a touch of fantasy about how a god from another world opened a door into our world.  That's where the monsters come from.  They're acidic and die quickly in our world but any contact with them is deadly.  It's a good another soldier is around to help Hallie with her burn.

There's also a story of young love here.  I enjoyed watching it develop and I enjoyed seeing Hallie beginning to come to terms with her past and the present.  Despite being a tale of despair it becomes a tale of hope and reassurance for the future.  This was a good read and I think there may be more in this series.  I'd read them.
